Enclosure 2.

Hongkong, October 2nd, 1906.
To His Excellency
Sir Matthew Nathan, K.C.M.G.,
Governor of the Colony of
Hongkong.
Dear Sir,
We have learned with deep regret
of the passing today of the Hon. Captain L. A. W. Barnes-
Lawrence.
This sad event has deprived his
wife and daughter of a loving husband and father and the
Colony of the services of a most painstaking and valuable
servant, whose position it will be difficult to replace.
As an official and a man, we, in
common with the entire shipping community, have learned to
respect and esteem him - uniformly courteous and obliging
under all circumstances; an honor to himself and the
Colony he so faithfully served.
We beg leave to express our heart-
felt condolence with yourself and the officials of the
Colony and also, through you, with his wife and daughters.
We subscribe ourselves,
Yours faithfully,
Pacific Mail Steamship Company, Occidental & Oriental Steamship
Company,
Toyo Kishen Kaisha,
Portland & Asiatic Steamship Company.
